FAQ
WHY THE COPPERPHONE AV20?
Placid Audio was founded in 2003 with it’s flagship mic the
Copperphone. To commemorate our 20th Anniversary we have decided to release the Copperphone AV20, which is an updated and improved version of original Copperphone, our most popular model to date.
I JUST ORDERED A COPPERPHONE AV20, HOW LONG WILL IT TAKE FOR ME TO RECEIVE IT?
The Copperphone AV20 is a limited edition model and is in production and in stock. Standard US domestic shipping usually takes 2-3 business days, while international shipping will take about 7-10 business days.
WHAT DOES THE COPPERPHONE AV20 SOUND LIKE AND WHAT MAKES IT DIFFERENT FROM ANY OTHER MICROPHONE?
The Copperphone AV20, unlike full range high fidelity microphones, operates within a limited bandwidth of frequencies which lends a nostalgic quality to the signal. Some might compare the sound to an AM radio or a telephone (sound samples coming soon). The sound is achieved through a combination of the microphone’s sealed transducer and an onboard filter circuit. As sound passes through the diaphragm, upper mid range frequencies are accentuated while low and high frequencies are reduced.
WHAT MAKES THE COPPERPHONE AV20 DIFFERENT FROM THE STANDARD COPPERPHONE?
Although the Copperphone AV20 delivers a sound in the same lo-fi world as the standard Copperphone, the tone is a bit different. The Copperphone AV20 employs a sealed component filtered transducer instead of a rear ported mechanical filtered transducer as found on the standard Copperphone.
Furthermore the output of the Copperphone AV20 is increased +8db via a step up transformer. The resulting sound is warmer and more direct sounding with better output. The sound can be further altered via the ‘Dark Mode’ switch which engages a 2nd order low pass filter, offering an additional flavor of vintage character.
Finally the Copperphone AV20 features a silver double mesh pop screen grill and the all copper chassis is mounted in a solid fully machined aluminum bracket.
DOES THE COPPERPHONE AV20 COME WITH A MOUNTING SYSTEM AND HOW DO I ATTACH IT TO A MIC STAND?
Yes the Copperphone AV20 comes with a rugged adjustable aircraft aluminum mounting bracket that can be attached to any standard North American mic stand (5/8 inch). If you have a European style mic stand (3/8 inch), the Copperphone AV20 can be attached with a threaded adapter insert (
see here). This type of insert is not provided with the Copperphone AV20 but can be easily obtained at your local music store for a nominal cost.
Installation is done by simply screwing the Copperphone AV20 and its bracket onto the mic stand. A few words of caution – do not over tighten the bracket on the stand as damage to the mounting bracket can result.
DOES THE COPPERPHONE AV20 USE PHANTOM POWER AND WHAT SORT OF CONNECTION DOES IT REQUIRE?
The Copperphone AV20 does not use phantom power as it has a passive dynamic element. It uses a Neutrik style 3 pin male XLR connector and can be connected to any audio gear with a 3 pin female XLR connector via an XLR cable. Accidentally applying phantom power will not harm the microphone or affect its performance.
CAN THE COPPERPHONE AV20 BE USED IN THE STUDIO?
Certainly. Because the sound of Copperphone AV20 has a character unlike many other traditional mics, it makes a great addition to any recording enthusiast’s arsenal of microphones. It can be used as an all out obvious ‘effect’ on it’s own or it can be paired with other traditional microphones for infinite blending possibilities.
CAN THE COPPERPHONE AV20 BE USED LIVE? WHAT ABOUT FEEDBACK?
Yes it can be used live and many vocal performers use the Copperphone AV20 as a specialty effects mic in conjunction with their regular microphone. As with any microphone, feedback can be an issue. Results will vary depending on the application, the overall volume of your band, the quality of the sound system and the experience of the engineer running the sound system. However very careful adjustment and equalization of the Copperphone AV20 in the monitors can yield acceptable results. If you use an in ear monitor system, potential feedback problems are usually not an issue.
IS THE COPPERPHONE AV20 OR ITS DIAPHRAGM FRAGILE? WILL IT STOP WORKING IF IT IS DROPPED OR MISHANDLED?
It should not. The Copperphone AV20 is constructed from quality rugged materials and is likely to withstand a high degree of shock or other physical impacts. The Copperphone AV20 can also withstand extremely high sound pressure levels without damage to the diaphragm. However a high SPL is likely to overdrive the diaphragm resulting in a clipping style distortion that may be desired for some applications.
DOES THE COPPERPHONE AV20 REALLY COME WITH A LIFETIME OPERATIONAL WARRANTY?
Yes and the warranty covers any part of the microphone’s operational performance. The warranty does not cover general wear and tear on the cosmetics of the microphone. If for any reason your Copperphone AV20 stops working or seems to be working improperly please
contact us and let us know the problem. If a repair is required please ship your mic to us and we will fix it free of charge.
